KZUM Celebrates 30 Years

Thirty years later, KZUM and Open Harvest continue their storied relationship. KZUM and Open Harvest recently teamed up for the From Garden to Table grant that provides new Americans access to healthy, whole-foods.

Many remember when KZUM set up its broadcast facilities in the basement of Open Harvest at 27th and Randolph Streets. It was the late-1970s, a time of experimentation and new beginnings for both non-profits. At that point, KZUM's broadcast signal had only a one-mile radius. Space was also at a premium. "It was really cramped," remembers KZUM and Open Harvest volunteer Jim Anderson. After years of renovations, upgrades and location changes, both local organizations found solid ground.

In 2008, KZUM will celebrate its 30th year providing an alternative voice on the Lincoln airwaves. There will be activities, concerts and benefits throughout the calendar year. To kick things off, the station will host an art auction on Saturday, February 3rd at 5 p.m. at the Loft at the Mill. More information is available at www.kzum.org.

And, for you trivia buffs out there- KZUM went on the air February 14, 1978 with the satin sounds of Richie Havens' "Here Comes The Sun."

Both Open Harvest and KZUM were born in the 1970's by ambitious community builders with visions of empowerment. On February 14, 1978 KZUM transmitted its first broadcast from the basement of Open Harvest's original location at 27th and Randolph streets. Due to the loyalty and support of countless dedicated people, both organizations continue to survive and serve the Lincoln area to this day.
