A Dash of History... from Jumpin' Kate

By Katie Logan (Formerly Katie Boner)

Connection with community is just one of the remarkable aspects of having worked as one of the first paid cashiers at Open Harvest back in the day (circa: late 1980's).

Vegetarians can get to feeling pretty lonely out here in Cow Country, so just the very presence of a co-op was welcome refuge for my "special sensibilities." When I got a job at the old place on 27th and Randolph, I gained confidence and confirmation, connecting with folks who were likewise concerned about environment, ecology, and health issues. I learned a great deal, read up on current topics and shared knowledge with people who stopped by every week or every once in a while. I miss helping people discover natural alternatives for everything from sugar to shingles.

I made lots of dear friends, and still see customers who aren't quite sure where they know me from, while others remember me well. That's a good feeling. I feel like I really helped people, while they helped me feel like I belong here in the "Beef Belt." I'd like to wish the community a prosperous New Year! I know I'm richer for having connected with Open Harvest. Here's hoping that others discover the same!
